Maternal and Newborn Center
Having a baby is one of the most important, life-changing events you will ever experience. These precious hours will be remembered for the rest of your life, so we do everything we can to provide the childbirth experience you desire. Each year, approximately 380 babies are born in our progressive (not sure if I like the wording) unit, which focuses on a philosophy of family-centered care.
The family-centered care you receive will help family members also be involved in the first hours of your child's life, to the extent that is safe for you and your baby. While you're here, you will have an opportunity to learn parenting skills to help enhance a healthy family life.
Childbirth Education Classes
When it is time to prepare for the birth of your baby, think of the childbirth education series. Expectant parents can prepare for the birth of their child during this series — "Giving Birth in the 21st Century."
You will learn relaxation and breathing techniques, preparation for labor and delivery, exercises, and what to expect when you come to the hospital. A tour of the Maternal and Newborn Center is included.

Breastfeeding is a natural, though learned, skill for both mother and newborn. There are few moments more cherished than those spent during the quiet bonding while feeding your new baby. However, it is natural to have questions and concerns about this method. Mercy Health Grayling offers support and education for mothers who are preparing to breastfeed, whether it's their first or fifth time.
Breastfeeding for Healthy Mothers and Babies
The American Academy of Pediatrics identifies breastfeeding as the ideal method for feeding and nurturing infants. Breastfeeding also is important in achieving optimal infant and child health, growth, and development.
Babies who are breastfed for at least six months have fewer health problems than babies who are artificially fed, including fewer infections, illnesses, and allergies.
Studies have found babies who are breastfed are likely to have:
- Decreased risk of asthma
- Fewer chronic digestive diseases
- Higher IQs
- Less risk of diabetes
- Lower incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
Women who breastfeed also lower their risk of breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer, as well as osteoporosis.
